Landrover tour with a local guide
Excellent birding sites
Langanes peninsula is popular with bird-watchers and holds the third largest gannet nesting place in the world at Stóri karl.
On this tour exploring Langanes you‘ll see a great range of waders, including large numbers of Ringed Plover and Sanderling, Turnstone, Dunlin, and Purple Sandpipers. Kittiwakes are plentiful, with the powerfull Gannet fishing offshore. Scaup, Knot, and both Great Northern and Red-throated Divers are seen well. Large rafts of Eider bobb on the waves, and a Skua or two puts the whole lot up like a Peregrine. On the way out look for Northern Wheatear and Snow Bunting along the road.
The seabird colonies in the cliffs of Skoruvík are spectacular. With Northern Gannet, Kittiwake, Northern Fulmar, Puffin, Razorbill and Common Guillemot, plus the star species, Brünnich’s Guillemot, one of Iceland’s target birds for visitors. Here the viewing platform, the first of it‘s kind in Iceland, gives visitors a unique vantage point from which to view one of Iceland’s preeminent gannet nesting sites. The platform extends some 10 meters out from the cliff that overlooks the Stóri karl column, offering visitors an impressive view of the diverse birdlife of the area.
