Landrover tour with a local guide
Light house at 'World's End'
In this tour we visit the birdcliffs of Skoruvik and the ruins of once prosperous fishing village Skálar, following the coastline north all the way to the lighthouse at Fontur.
The seabird colonies in the cliffs of Skoruvík are spectacular. Here the viewing platform, the first of it‘s kind in Iceland, gives visitors a unique vantage point from which to view one of Iceland’s preeminent gannet nesting sites. The platform extends some 10 meters out from the cliff that overlooks the Stóri karl column, offering visitors an impressive view of the diverse birdlife of the area. We'll see amongst others Atlantic Puffins, Northern Gannets, Guillemot and Kittiwake.
Driving on toward Skálar we'll take in old times that once were. Residents abandoned this harsh and isolated village more than 50 years ago and only a few sheep graze in the green pastures during the long Arctic days.
Fontur is best described as a good friend of ours once said; 'you don't have to go to space to find space.'
On the way we'll tell you all we know about the area and about living in a place like this.
